تقطیر (Distillation)

• روش تقطیر اولین نوع فرآیند نمک‌زدایی است که در مقیاس بزرگ مورد استفاده قرار گرفت (از سال 1950 شروع شد).

• در تقطیر حرارتی، آب تا رسیدن به نقطه جوش خود گرم می‌شود و سپس بخار آن محبوس شده و به مایع تبدیل می‌گردد.

• تقطیر تحت خلاء، در اصل با کمتر کردن فشار نسبت به فشار اتمسفری، نقطه جوش آب را پایین می‌آورد و اجازه می‌دهد تا آب در دمایی بسیار کمتر از دمای جوش طبیعی بجوشد. به‌دلیل کاهش دما، در مصرف انرژی صرفه‌جویی می‌شود.

تقطیر سریع چند مرحله‌ای (Multistage Flash Distillation)

این روش رایج‌ترین نوع تقطیر است و در برخی از منابع اشاره شده است که، در سراسر جهان، تقطیر سریع چند مرحله‌ای، آب بیشتری را نسبت به دیگر اشکال تقطیر تولید می‌کند ( اگر چه تعداد این نوع از تأسیسات نسبت به دیگر انواع آب شیرین کن کمتر می‌باشد).

در تقطیر سریع چند مرحله‌ای، آب دریای ورودی را گرم کرده و فشار آن‌را کم‌ می‌کنند، به‌طوری که آب به‌سرعت به بخار تبدیل می‌شود. این فرآیند از یک مرحله تشکیل شده است که این مرحله نیز شامل تعدادی از مراحل سری می‌باشد و هر کدام از آن‌ها دارای فشار پایین‌تری هستند. مایع حاصل از بخار، جمع‌ آوری می‌گردد.

الکترودیالیز (Electrodialysis)

• این روش شامل حذف نمک توسط عملیات جدا سازی و جمع‌آوری اجزای شیمیایی آن، از طریق الکترولیز می‌باشد.

• در این مورد، استفاده از آب لب‌شور زیر زمینی یا آب سطحی، مناسب‌تر از آب دریا  است زیرا وقتی سطح شوری بیشتر از تقریباً 10 g/l باشد، از نظر اقتصادی مقرون به صرفه نمی‌باشد.

• از سال 1960 از این روش در موارد تجاری استفاده شد.
